Chromatex
Aim
Chromatex aims to evaluate the various Cr6-free passivations for electrolytic zinc before they are implemented in small to medium-sized companies. At the same time methods are being developed (qualitative as well as quantitative) for determining the efficiency of these new processes.
Content
Very comprehensive tests were carried out in order to compare the various commercially available systems.
The following techniques were used:
- SEM to determine the surface appearance
- Thickness measurement by means of optical microscopy of cross-sections
- Chemical analysis of the passivation fluids using ion chromatography - Determination of the chemical composition of the applied surface layer
- Corrosion resistance
Taking into account the results of the Chromatex research and tests implemented internally, Duroc has pronounced itself in favour of Zink-Top. This silicate-based passivation gives exceptionally good results for tumbled parts principally because of its self-healing properties. You can find more information about this in the Zink-Top section.
